day 2
what an amazing sleep. it probably has to do with a lot of different things... the anxiety of day one being over... how extremely cozy my sleeping bag is... stuff like that. i'm reminded of the phrase, "waking up naturally."
i get my stuff together and go over to the washrooms to have a shower. it's pretty cold out (maybe 5 degrees celcius) and the humidity doesn't help. inside the washroom it's no warmer & taking my clothes off is pretty painful. the machine says 50 cents for 7 minutes so i fire it up.
oh my god. bad. i'm watching the shower head just dribble out six incredibly pathetic streams of bloody cold water. the handle is cranked over to the hot side & nothing's working. yup, definitely one of my more vulnerable positions... here i am, naked, watching cold water come out of this broken shower, with no big towel to run to, in an unheated bathroom, wondering to myself, "why the hell did i leave my sleeping bag?" so i guess it takes a while for the hot water to come out first thing in the morning... ouch. when it finally does come, it's scalding hot. whatever, i get used to it.
there are few other times in a person's life that you really do want time to stand still as when you're taking a timed campground shower in a cold bathroom. maybe while looking at the clock during a final exam, but you get the idea. when it finally stops, i immediately plug another 50 cents in for seven more minutes of "bliss".
back at my tent, i determine that i'm going to need to pick up a few things. namely, a stove, fuel, a mirror for my helmet, and a more detailed map of the east coast. i ride down to canadian tire & pick these things up. incidently, it is *really* tough going on the bike. hills are now huge. even the smallest incline puts my speed down to 15km/h. again, i realized that it's going to be a hell of a long ride.
